Aegean Region

On its Asian side, the Aegean region has fertile soils and a typically Mediterranean climate with mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers. The broad, cultivated valley lowlands contain about half of the country's richest farmland. Turkey's Aegean shores are among the loveliest landscapes in the country. The magnificent coastline, lapped by the clear water of the Aegean Sea, abounds in vast and pristine beaches surrounded by olive groves, rocky crags and pine woods. Dotted with idyllic fishing harbours, popular holiday villages and the remains of ancient civilizations attesting to the inheritance of more than 5,000 years of history, culture and mythology, this region offers a holiday with something for everyone: nature lovers, sun worshippers, photographers, sports enthusiasts, sailors and archaeologists.

For sunbathing and water sports, the summer months are ideal; for exploring the ancient ruins and picturesque countryside, spring and autumn are the most inviting months. The Aegean provides the perfect escape from the rigors of a northern winter: even in January and February, the days are sunny and pleasant.

The Aegean Region is composed for next provinces: Afyonkarahisa, Aydin, Denizli, Izmir , Küthaya, Manisa, Mugla and Usak.

Izmir , the gateway to the Aegean region, is connected to Istanbul by frequent air, bus and train connections. Izmir is the 3rd largest, and one of the most beautiful provinces of Turkey extending on the shores of an attractive bay, filled with ships and yachts. Backed by mountains and facing the sea, this site offers a fine appearance, both with its natural panorama and its modern and orderly view. Lovely palm trees decorate the promenades and avenues, where new and impressive buildings stand. Walking around this charming city, one can see a lot, ranging from the oldest remains, to the most recent establishments scattered around. The clocktower stands in Konak Square as a symbol of the city while nearby the Archelogical Museum houses many finds from the early western Anatolian civilizations.

The area was first settled by Ionian Greeks in about the 11th century BC who established the city of Smyrna, Izmir city. It was later conquered by the Persians, retaken by the Greeks, before being subsumed into the Roman Empire . After the split of the Roman Empire, the area became part of the Byzantine Empire until conquered by the Ottoman Turks in the 14th century. Following the First World War the province was ceded to Greece, but was retaken by the forces of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in the Turkish War of Independence. A highly controversial point involved massive genocide of Turkish civilians by Greek soldiers, and of Greek civilians by Turkish soldiers. As a result of the Treaty of Lausanne all non-Turkish and non-Muslim inhabitants of the province had to leave, and Izmir Province was incorporated into the modern republic of Turkey.

About 100 km northward is located the city of Bergama, which is historically famous for the antique city of Pergamon and for its traditional quarter made up of old Ottoman houses. The site has remarkable remains from the Roman and Byzantine periods. The Asclepion to the southwest of the lower city was built to pay homage to the God of Health, Asclepios, and it was the most celebrated in the world. The temples of Trajan and Dionysus, majestic Altar of Zeus, the temple of Demeter , inspiring theatre, the gymnasium, the arsenals, the lower agora and the famous library form the Acropolis. In addition, you may see the finds from Pergamum and the surrounding area in the Archaeological and Ethnographical Museum . The temple of Serapis , also called the "Red Courtyard" due to its red tiles, is today located within the town of Bergama . It was built as a sanctuary dedicated to Serapis and was then converted into a basilica by the Byzantines. Bergama is the homeland of many philosophers and scientists. Among them is Krates who invented and produced the "parchment paper" here.
