Marmara Sea Region

Marmara Region occupies the northwest corner of the country. Being a point of juncture between Europe and Asia , this area has seen thousands of tribes and their civilizations passing through, from one continent to the other. The European portion of Turkey consists mainly of rolling plateau country well suited to agriculture. It receives about 520 millimeters of rainfall annually.

The Marmara Sea Region is composed for next provinces: Balikesir, Bilecik, Bursa , Çanakkale, Edirne , Istanbul, Kirklareli, Kocaeli, Sakarya, Tekirdag and Yalova.

Istanbul , as the core of this background, stands with all its magnificence and signs from its far-reaching past. It has such a location that it constitutes not only a city of history, but also one of natural beauty beyond example. Extending on the two sides of the Bosphorus bordered by green groves, it also possesses beautiful shores along the internal Marmara Sea . Facing the city there are small, pretty islands, adorning this big sea, lying in the middle of the region. Rainfall is high enough to facilitate growing a variety of fruits, while snowfall enlivens the winter holidays.

The Bosphorus, which links the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea, is about twenty-five kilometres long and averages 1.5 kilometres in width but narrows in places to less than 1000 meters . There are two suspension bridges over the Bosphorus, both its Asian and European banks rise steeply from the water and form a succession of cliffs, coves, and nearly landlocked bays. Most of the shores are densely wooded and are marked by numerous small towns and villages.

Edirne is a city in Thrace, the westernmost part of Turkey, close to the borders with Greece and Bulgaria. The city was known in English until after the First World War as Adrianople . The city initially took its name after its Roman (re)founder, and the usage remains current in Greek, though it has fallen into desuetude in English and other languages. The Turks, however, have commonly used Edirne (now the official and customary name) or Edreneh, and the Slavs Odrin or Jedrene; all of these are probably adapted forms of the name Hadrian. Bordering Greece and Bulgaria, the land in Thrace is covered by wide fields of sunflowers and vineyards, while olive groves are found extending all over the region, like the gardens in Balikesir on the Anatolian side. In the same district there is a special spot nearby a broad lake: the National Park of "Kus Cenneti" (Bird Paradise) which is a bird sanctuary sheltering over two thousand species of birds.

Bursa is Turkey 's fourth largest city. It was known in the antiquity and the medieval period with the name Prusa. The city is known as "Yesil Bursa" (meaning "Green Bursa") from its beautiful parks and gardens located throughout the city. The city is famous for its ski resorts (on the mountain of Uludag), the mausoleums of Ottoman sultans, and the surrounding fertile plain. Bursa was a major city, located on the westernmost end of the famous Silk Road, and was the capital of the Ottoman Empire following its capture from the Byzantines in 1326 until the capture of Edirne in 1365 and remained an important administrative and commercial center even after it lost its status as the capital. During the rule of the Ottomans, Bursa was the source of most royal silk products. It received the raw silk from Iran , and occasionally China , and was the 'factory' for the kaftans, pillows, embroidery and other silk products for the royal palaces up through the 17th century. Some of these included golden or silver silk threads, which were of particular luxury because they were made by wrapping extremely thin gold or silver wire around a single silk thread by hand.

The Dardanelles Strait , which links the Sea of Marmara and the Aegean Sea, is approximately forty kilometres long and increases in width toward the south. Unlike the Bosphorus, the Dardanelles has fewer settlements along its shores. Çanakkale is a town and seaport in Turkey, on the southern (Asiatic) coast of the Dardanelles. Çanakkale is the second province (first one is Istanbul ) in Turkey that has lands on two different continents (Europe and Asia ). There are ferries to cross to the northern (European) side of the strait. Çanakkale is the nearest major town to the site of ancient Troy . The "wooden horse" from the 2004 movie Troy is exhibited on the seafront. Çanakkale was originally an Ottoman fortress called Kale-i Sultaniye (Fortress of the Sultan) and it later became known for its pottery, the origin of its current name (Turkish: çanak meaning "pot," and kale meaning "fortress. Crossing the Dardanelles strait by ferry, we can arrive to the Gallipoli Peninsula , were the Battle of Gallipoli took place from April 1915 to January 1916 during the First World War. A joint British and French operation was mounted in order to eventually capture the Ottoman capital of Constantinople (now Istanbul). The attempt failed, with heavy casualties on both sides.
