In the geological periods, Mount Erciyes, Hasandagi and Golludag were active volcanoes. The eruptions of these volcanoes started in the Early Miocene (10 million years ago) and the lava produced by these volcanoes formed a layer of tufa and other materials as ash, clay, sandstone and basalt. The rivers in the area, especially Kizilirmak (the Red River ), joined with the local lakes, the wind and the rain, have contributed to the erosion of this layer of tufa stone giving eventually the area its current fairy shape and magical colourful.
Due to that, Cappadocia is like another planet with its unbelievable rock formations (the famous Fairy Chimneys), cave dwellings, rock-cut churches and monasteries, underground cities, rock citadels and pink, red, yellowish, greenish or white coloured valleys. You will feel as if being on a different planet in Cappadocia
